MUMBAI: A security guard has been arrested for allegedly stealing gold jewellery worth Rs 4 lakh from a jeweller’s handbag left on a scooter at a housing society in Andheri(east).
The theft incident was reported between April 30 and May 1 and subsequently the guard, Parmanand Yadav, was arrested, a police officer said.

Madan Chauhan, who runs a jewellery store in Jogeshwari, had come home on April 30 around 10.30pm after shutting his shop for the day. He hurried upstairs after parking his scooter on the building premises. The next morning he realised that he had left his bag containing 16 tolas of ornaments on his scooter. Chauhan rushed downstairs but could not find the bag. He then lodged a complaint at Jogeshwari police station.

The police started probing by quizzing people working in the building and also checked the CCTV footage of the building. After making inquiries Yadav was arrested. The cameras had captured him walking away with the bag.
Yadav admitted to the theft and told the police he had hidden the bag in a neighbouring building. The police said the ornaments have been recovered.
